Google's Latest AI Search Update: What It Means For Your Business
by Will Williamson on 20-Jul-2026 10:00:01

We recently hosted a live masterclass explaining Google's biggest search changes in years. Here's what you need to know, plus you can watch the full webinar replay below.
Over the past two decades, Google has been remarkably consistent. You searched, clicked through to websites, and found your answers.
That is changing rapidly.
With AI Overviews now appearing across Google Search, alongside the growing use of ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI assistants, the way your customers research suppliers is evolving. If your business depends on generating enquiries online, it's important to understand what these changes mean and how to adapt.
In June we hosted a live masterclass where we explained these developments, demonstrated real examples, and answered questions from business owners. If you couldn't join us live, you can watch the replay above.
Below we've summarised the main takeaways.
Why Is Google Changing?
For years, Google's job was straightforward. You searched for something, Google returned a list of websites, and you clicked through to find the answer.
Today, users expect something different.
Instead of searching for "best CRM software", people now ask:
"What's the best CRM for a manufacturing company with a five-person sales team that already uses Microsoft 365?"
Google increasingly answers these questions directly using AI.
Instead of ten blue links, users often see an AI-generated summary at the top of the page, bringing together information from multiple trusted sources.
This means customers can complete much more of their research before they ever visit a website.
What Are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated answers that appear above the traditional search results.
They summarise information from multiple websites to answer a user's question immediately.
Rather than clicking five or six different websites, users often get the information they need straight away.
This creates a significant change in how businesses earn visibility online.
Ranking well is still important, but being one of the sources Google chooses to reference is becoming just as valuable.
Does This Mean SEO Is Dead?
No.
SEO is still essential.
Your website still needs:
- strong technical foundations
- fast loading pages
- excellent user experience
- useful, authoritative content
- clear site structure
- trust and credibility
Think of traditional SEO as the foundations of your online visibility.
What's changing is that those foundations now need to support AI search as well.
Rather than replacing SEO, AI search builds upon it. Businesses that already produce helpful, expert content are often in the strongest position to benefit.
How Is The Buying Journey Changing?
One of the biggest changes discussed during the webinar was how customers now research suppliers.
Instead of visiting several websites first, many buyers begin by asking AI platforms detailed questions.
For example:
- Which marketing agency works with engineering companies?
- What CRM integrates best with HubSpot?
- What's the typical cost of outsourced marketing?
- What questions should I ask before choosing an accountant?
By the time they reach your website, they've often already shortlisted potential suppliers.
This means your online content has to help you become part of those early AI-generated recommendations.
What Content Performs Well In AI Search?
Google's AI systems reward businesses that genuinely help users.
That means creating content which answers real customer questions clearly and thoroughly.
Examples include:
- detailed blog articles
- pricing guides
- comparison pages
- FAQs
- buyer guides
- videos
- case studies
- expert insights
The businesses that consistently educate their market are becoming far more visible in both traditional search and AI-generated answers.
Simply listing your services on your website is no longer enough.
Should You Optimise For Keywords Or Customer Questions?
Increasingly, you need both.
Keywords still matter because they help search engines understand what your pages cover.
However, AI search places much greater emphasis on intent.
Ask yourself:
- What questions do prospects ask before they contact you?
- What concerns stop them buying?
- What comparisons do they make?
- What pricing information do they need?
- What misconceptions should you explain?
If you create content that genuinely answers these questions, you increase your chances of appearing in both Google search and AI-generated results.
How Can You Improve Your AI Visibility?
During the webinar we shared several practical recommendations.
Continue investing in quality SEO
Technical SEO still matters.
A fast, secure, well-structured website gives Google confidence in your content.
Publish genuinely useful content
Create articles, guides, and videos that answer your customers' questions.
Depth and expertise are becoming increasingly important.
Demonstrate authority
AI systems look for businesses that consistently demonstrate expertise.
Publishing regularly, sharing case studies, and explaining complex topics clearly all help build credibility.
Think beyond Google
Many buyers now use ChatGPT, Gemini, and other AI tools during their research.
The more useful information available about your business across the web, the more likely these platforms are to reference you.
What Does This Mean For SMEs?
For many SMEs, this change actually creates an opportunity.
Large companies don't automatically win in AI search.
Businesses that consistently publish high-quality educational content can compete extremely effectively because AI systems prioritise relevance and authority rather than simply company size.
If you understand your customers' questions better than your competitors, and answer them consistently, you can significantly improve your online visibility.
What Should You Do Next?
The businesses that succeed over the next few years won't necessarily be those with the biggest marketing budgets.
They'll be the businesses that become the most helpful source of information in their market.
That means creating content that answers your buyers' questions, building a technically strong website, and developing a marketing strategy that works across Google Search, AI search engines, social media, email, and your sales process.
At JDR, this is exactly how we help SMEs grow. Our proven six-step marketing system combines strategy, content, SEO, AI visibility, website optimisation, and lead generation into one integrated approach, helping you generate more enquiries and convert more of them into customers.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Live AI Search Masterclass
Is SEO still worth investing in now that AI search is growing?
Yes. SEO is becoming even more important, but the focus is evolving.
A technically strong website, fast loading pages, clear site structure, and high-quality content are still the foundations of online visibility. The difference is that your content now needs to help search engines and AI platforms understand your expertise and use it when answering users' questions.
Think of it this way: SEO helps your website get discovered, while AI optimisation helps your expertise become part of the answer. The two work together rather than replacing each other.
What's the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
These terms are becoming increasingly common, but they each describe a slightly different objective.
- SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) focuses on helping your website rank in traditional search results.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) focuses on structuring your content so search engines can use it to answer questions directly.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) aims to improve the chances of AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity referencing your business when generating responses.
In practice, you don't need three separate strategies. If you consistently publish helpful, authoritative content that answers your customers' questions, you'll be well positioned for all three.
How do AI platforms know about my business?
This was one of the most popular questions during the webinar.
AI platforms don't usually rely on information that you submit directly. Instead, they build an understanding of your business from publicly available information across the web.
That includes:
- your website
- blog articles
- FAQs
- case studies
- customer reviews
- industry directories
- trusted third-party websites
- social media activity
The more consistent, accurate, and helpful your information is across these sources, the more confidence AI platforms have in recommending your business.
Will AI reduce traffic to my website?
Possibly, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
As AI answers more questions directly, some users will no longer need to click through to websites for basic information.
However, the visitors who do arrive are often much further through the buying journey. They've already researched their options, shortlisted suppliers, and are looking for proof that you're the right choice.
Many businesses are therefore seeing fewer website visits but higher-quality enquiries and better conversion rates.
Should I create content that ranks in Google, or content that answers questions?
The answer is both.
Your first priority should always be creating genuinely useful content that answers the questions your ideal customers are asking.
When you do that well, you're far more likely to rank in Google and be referenced by AI search tools.
Rather than writing for search engines first, write for your customers first. Explain complex topics clearly, answer common objections, and provide practical guidance. That's exactly the type of content modern search engines are looking for.
Do FAQ pages help with AI search?
Yes. Well-written FAQ pages are becoming increasingly valuable.
FAQs mirror the way people naturally interact with AI. Instead of searching using short keywords, users ask complete questions.
Creating FAQ sections around genuine customer questions makes it easier for search engines and AI platforms to understand your expertise and surface your content when those questions are asked.
Can I see the questions people are asking before they find my website?
Yes, to an extent.
Tools such as Google Search Console and Google Analytics provide valuable insight into the searches that bring people to your website. Specialist SEO platforms can provide even more detailed data about the questions your target audience is asking online.
Reviewing this information regularly can help you identify new content opportunities and ensure you're answering the questions that matter most to potential customers.
Should I update my existing website or start creating new content?
Usually, both.
Start by reviewing your existing content. Many businesses already have valuable articles that can be updated with more current information, clearer answers, and additional FAQs.
Then create new content around emerging topics, changing customer behaviour, and the latest industry questions. Businesses that publish consistently are far more likely to remain visible as AI search continues to evolve.
