JDR Group At The University Of Derby Game Changer Awards

What Are The University Of Derby Game Changer Awards?
The University of Derby Game Changer Awards bring together some of the most ambitious and innovative student entrepreneurs in the region. Held at the Cavendish Building, the event showcases new business ideas through live pitches, giving students the opportunity to present their concepts to a panel of judges and a live audience.
For you as a business owner, it is a reminder of how early-stage ideas develop, and how important it is to get the fundamentals of marketing, messaging, and strategy right from the beginning.
What Made This Year's Event Stand Out?
The breadth and quality of ideas on display were impressive. Students presented ventures across a wide range of sectors, including science, engineering, environmental innovation, fashion, health, and social impact.
What stood out most was not just the ideas themselves, but how confidently they were communicated. The level of professionalism, clarity, and preparation showed that these founders are already thinking seriously about how to take their ideas to market.
You could see the early signs of what many established businesses struggle with: clear positioning, strong value propositions, and a willingness to step forward and present.
How Was JDR Group Involved?
As a Derby-based digital marketing agency, we were proud to attend and support the event.
We contributed a marketing and coaching package designed to help early-stage founders move from idea to execution. That support focuses on the areas that often make the biggest difference early on:
- Clarifying your message
- Understanding your audience
- Communicating your value clearly
These are the same principles we apply when working with established SMEs. The difference is that at this stage, getting them right can shape the entire future of the business.
Our involvement builds on our ongoing relationship with the University of Derby, including our support for initiatives like the Digital Impact Mentorship Competition.
Why Does Supporting Early-Stage Entrepreneurs Matter?
If you want to grow your business, you need to think long term. That includes supporting the next generation of entrepreneurs and contributing to the local business community.
Events like this highlight something important. Many founders start with strong ideas, but without clear marketing, those ideas struggle to gain traction.
You need to:
- Define exactly who your ideal customer is
- Communicate your value in a way they understand
- Build a consistent strategy across multiple channels
This is the same approach we use in our proven system for attracting, winning, and keeping customers. Without that structure, even the best ideas can fail to translate into sales.
By supporting founders early, you help them avoid the common mistakes that many established businesses still face: inconsistent messaging, unclear positioning, and disconnected marketing activity.
What Can You Take Away From Events Like This?
Watching these pitches reinforces a key point. Success is not just about having a good product or service. It is about how well you explain it, position it, and take it to market.
If you are looking at your own business, ask yourself:
- Can you clearly explain what you do and who you help?
- Are you consistent in how you communicate your value?
- Do you have a structured marketing strategy, or are you relying on isolated tactics?
These are the same challenges we see time and again with SME business owners. Many have strong businesses, but struggle to generate consistent leads because their marketing lacks structure and clarity.

Reflections From The Event
The standard of pitches was high across the board. It was encouraging to see so many students stepping forward with ideas and presenting them with confidence.
There was a clear sense of ambition and creativity, combined with a willingness to learn and improve. That combination is what drives long-term business success.
Who Made The Event Possible?
We would like to thank the organisers for delivering such a well-run and inspiring event, in particular Oliver Stonier and Samantha Deakin, along with the wider team at the University of Derby.
Events like this play an important role in developing future business leaders and supporting innovation in the region.
What Does This Mean For Your Business?
Our involvement in the Game Changer Awards reflects a wider commitment.
We work with businesses at every stage, from early ideas through to established SMEs looking to scale. The principles remain the same:
- Build a clear strategy
- Use multiple marketing channels
- Align your marketing with your sales process
If you want consistent growth, you need a structured approach that connects all of these elements.
That is why we developed our proven marketing system, and why we continue to support initiatives like this. Because whether you are starting out or looking to grow, the fundamentals of successful marketing do not change.
Looking Ahead
The future of these ventures is promising. With the right support, many of these ideas will develop into successful businesses that contribute to the regional economy.
We look forward to continuing our work with the University of Derby and supporting more entrepreneurs as they take the next step in their journey.
