Am I Tied In With A HubSpot CMS Website?

A business man in a suit tied up with rope as he tries to move his website to another platform and hosting company.

When considering a HubSpot website, it’s easy to become confused with issues surrounding ownership of their web pages and content. One of the most common questions we get asked is ‘Am I tied in?’. The aim of this article is to answer that question and to explain the process if you were to move away from HubSpot in the future.

Who Owns Your Website And Content?

HubSpot does not own any of your content or web pages and you can move these at any time. You own the content that you create and publish on your website, regardless of whether you use HubSpot or any other platform that hosts it. HubSpot does not own the content you create, but they do own the platform and the software that runs it.

When building your website, it will either need to be custom-coded (meaning only a developer/coder can make changes) or built on a content management system (a platform which means you can access and edit the site content).

Assuming you want to be able to edit your website once built, and you don’t want to have to pay a developer for every future change, then you’ll need a content management system (CMS). Whether this is HubSpot or any other CMS platform, your website content will need to be uploaded somewhere. In that respect, HubSpot is no different to any other website platform.

With a HubSpot website, as with most platforms, you maintain ownership and control of your website’s domain name and all the content you create.

What Happens If You Want To Move Websites In The Future?

Moving a website from HubSpot to another platform is like moving a website from WordPress or any other content management system. The process of moving a website is generally exporting your website's content and data, such as posts, pages, and media files, and importing them into your new platform using migration plugins or tools, manually exporting and importing data, or a combination of both.

The specifics of the process may vary due to the unique features and functionality of each platform but fundamentally the process of migration is the same.

Regardless of the platform moving a website takes time, but HubSpot makes it easy to export the data from all of your website pages, landing pages, and blog posts.

Why Choose HubSpot As Your Website Platform?

Compared with common platforms like WordPress, HubSpot provides better security and better marketing features, and its modular, drag-and-drop editing gives you more control.

There are no plugins or updates needed, and no need for a hosting company – your monthly hosting fees are instead a HubSpot subscription fee, and HubSpot will update the technology powering your website consistently. This means fewer costly (and time-consuming) rebuilds and new websites in the future as your website technology will never go out of date.

With HubSpot, you’ll also have the integrated CRM system, plus sales, marketing, and customer service tools all in one platform – meaning you can run all of your revenue-generating activities from one place.
